HAMTRAMCK, DETROIT, April 20, 2022 ~ Detroit soccer team, Detroit City Football Club (DCFC), earned a 2-1 victory against Ohio’s Columbus Crew Tuesday night in their first Major League Soccer (MLS) game.
Detroit City FC is currently in its first season in the USL Championship League, and the first year as a fully professional team.
“MLS wanted a team in Detroit,” said DCFC Defender Matt Lewis to 760 WJR‘s Guy Gordon. “The supporters put their foot down and said we want to do it our own way, we don’t want the big money, we want to build this from the ground up. And they were able to do that, and be able to hold on to their ideals, and it kind of came to a culmination last night with that game against the Crew — the first time an MLS team comes to town. And to be able to win and validate that whole process is really something special.”
The match was a third-round match in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, a more than 100-year-old tournament which includes all US Soccer-affiliated pro and amateur teams.
