Well this is definitely a new strategy to get out of paying back your student loans. 44-year-old Ian Locklear of Tampa, Florida graduated from the University of South Florida in 1995. And he took out six loans totaling $56,485. And in the 20 years since, they’ve piled on $10,891 in interest . . . because he hasn’t paid back a dime. But Ian says he shouldn’t have to pay them back . . . because he didn’t DESERVE them in the first place. Here’s his rationale. He got accepted to the University of South Florida when he was in 11th grade. So he dropped OUT of high school to go to college. Yep. He never finished 11th grade, never got a high school diploma, and never got his GED. He says that to qualify for student loans, you have to meet a list of requirements, one of which is the, quote, “ability to benefit” from them. And because he didn’t graduate high school, he says there was no evidence he’d benefit from college. It’s a creative excuse . . . probably TOO clever for someone whose argument basically rests on them not being bright. But Ian just filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education to get his loans dismissed.
